Why Your Business Needs a Strategy Before It Needs Content

Content without strategy is just noise. It takes up your time and your budget — and it does not compound into anything worth having.

The number one mistake businesses make with content marketing: they start creating content before they know what it is supposed to do.

They post on Instagram because someone said they should be on Instagram. They write blog posts because "SEO is important." They send emails because their competitor does. And after six months, they look at their results and wonder why nothing is growing.

Content without strategy is just noise. It takes up your time, your team, and your budget — and it does not compound into anything.

What a content strategy actually is

A content strategy is not a content calendar. It is not a list of topics. A content strategy is an answer to one question: what do we need our audience to believe, and how does the content we create move them toward believing it?

Every piece of content you create should have a job. To educate a potential customer about a problem they have. To build trust by showing how you solve it. To overcome a specific objection that is stopping people from buying. To remind existing customers why they made the right choice.

If the content does not have a clear job, it probably should not exist.

The three things you need before you create anything

First, a clear customer profile. Not demographics — understanding. What does your ideal customer worry about? What do they believe before they find you? What would have to be true for them to choose you?

Second, a defined position. What do you stand for, and what makes you different from the alternatives? Your content should consistently reflect this. If a customer read 10 of your blog posts and was not sure what you stood for, the content has failed.

Third, a conversion path. Where does the content send people? What should they do after reading it? If the answer is "nothing, they just read it," that is a problem worth fixing.

Starting the right way

If you have been creating content without a strategy, stop before creating anything new. Spend a few hours getting clear on your customer, your position, and your goals. Then ask: what content would genuinely help our ideal customer and move them closer to buying?

The answer to that question is your content strategy. Everything else is just execution.
